The SHOTMAN FAQ
How many camps are held each year? As of right now, we have several camps during the year. Our biggest camp is held in the middle of the summer at South Plainfield High School in South Plainfield, New Jersey. We also have camps at St. Mary's Regional High School in South Amboy, New Jersey, and mincamps and clinics at Sacred Heart School in South Plainfield, and at the YMCA in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.
Are there any sleepover camps? No. We currently do not have any sleepover camps at this time. Our biggest camp of the year in South Plainfield is a day camp from 9:30 AM-2:30 PM each day for a week. Our other camps are also day camps, but they are usually just two days.
Where are the camps located? As previously indicated we have camps in several different places throughout Central New Jersey. Locations are South Plainfield, South Amboy, and Scotch Plains.
What age groups can participate? Usually ages 12 to 18, but we do make exceptions. Our summer camps usually have ages in that range.
Are the camps for boys and girls? Yes. We have boys and girls from ages 12 to 18 at our camps during the year. They are matched up against those who have similar skill sets.
What skills are taught at your camps? We teach the fine arts of shooting, dribbling, passing, and foul shooting. We also provide visualization techniques and mental approaches to playing the game.
What kind of instruction do you provide? We provide a lot of one on one instruction as well as drills, and games to help youngsters improve their basketball skills.
What kind of instructors do you have? To start, we have Mike "SHOTMAN" Lanza who is one of the top shooting instructors around. He has been doing these camps for over 10 years. He is a National Shootout Finalist, and is now recognized by the Advisory Panel of Shooting Instructors, a nationally recognized panel of basketball shooting instructors. Then, we have Jeff Lubreski, Head Coach of South Plainfield High School. He was a former player, and has been a coach for 14 seasons. Then, we have Gene Mosley, Head Coach, Princeton High School who served as an assistant under Jeff Lubreski at South Plainfield before moving on to coach at Bound Brook High School, and finally Princeton High School.
Do you have guest speakers? Yes. We usually have guest speakers that were either former alumni, or college players. A couple of guests we have had as speakers was Rob Hodgson of Rutgers University, and Walt McPeek, a SHOTMAN alumnus, from Rider.
How many kids attend your camp? The numbers have been increasing over the past few years. Last year there was in excess of 65 to 70 kids that attended the camp held at South Plainfield in the summer. That number has been on the increase over the past few years. In 1996, there was only a total of about 45 kids at the camp to give you an idea.
Are there going to be camps in other locations? We are working on that. We are currently adding some new features to our sites to get sponsors and also contact with various high school and college coaches to have SHOTMAN come visit for a special camp. Travel expenses and fees have to be considered, and will be negotiable.
How much does it cost? Well, for our camp during the summer the price is usually $115.00 for the week. As far as the other camps that are held during the year, the price usually ranges from $50.00-$65.00 for the two days.
Does SHOTMAN have a proven track record? Yes. There are SHOTMAN alumni from Duke, Rider College, Rutgers Newark, Middlesex County College, and Lehigh University. We also have had campers from Florida, Louisiana, New York, and all over New Jersey come to the camp.
